Companhia das Letras has been publishing a judicious selection of biographies of leading figures from the History of Brazil since 2006. Not surprisingly, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva was one of those chosen for inclusion in this list of Brazilian personalities. The task of writing his biography was handed to Miriam Dolhnikoff.
