Drawers of the Torre do Tombo. Documents on Military Orders

Within the framework of the research project PTDC/HIS-HIS/102956/2008 - "Commanderies of Military Orders: national profile and international insertion" (2010-2013), supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology, it was deemed useful to make available the documents on Military Orders existing in Torre do Tombo National Archives, given that their diverse themes allow the aforementioned project to be contextualized within its scope.

Thus, the present database was organized, including 742 documents from this fund, with the following origin:

Drawer 4 – documentation related to the Order of Avis

Drawer 5 – documentation related to the Order of Santiago

Drawer 6 – documentation related to the Order of the Hospital

Drawer 7 – documentation related to the Order of Christ

Drawer 21 - documentation related to the Monastery of Santos, of the Order of Santiago

The available search fields allow the identification of documents by date (always mentioning a Start Date/End Date) and by theme (using the free search field, where names, places, etc., can be filled).

In case of a date search corresponding to a long period (e.g., a century), the full start date (e.g., 1400-01-01) and the full end date (e.g., 1499-12-31) should be entered.
