Portuguese-Spanish Relations in the Middle Ages

As part of the Research Project "The Basic Framework of Political and Diplomatic Relations of Portugal with Various World Powers from the Beginning of the Portuguese Monarchy to the Present Day; Organized and Composed by the Viscount of Santarém. Volumes I and II," this database serves as a starting point for understanding the relations between Portugal and the other Iberian kingdoms (12th-16th centuries). The project was developed under the "Ciência 2007" Program by the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology), under the Contract for PhDs for the National Scientific and Technological System, 04/24/2007, which ran from February 1, 2008, to January 31, 2013. Among other activities, this research led to the organization of a database entitled "Portuguese-Spanish Relations in the Middle Ages."

This database is open-access and hosted by CEPESE.

Notes on the Database

Days, months, or years that are not identified are marked with "[...]". If the dates are hypothetical, they are also presented in brackets "[...]".

Document references have been updated whenever more recent publications or summaries were available. For instance, references from the "Archivo General de Simancas" cited in the "Corpus Documental..." were preferred over those in Luis Suarez Fernandez and Antonio De la Torre's "Documentos referentes a las relaciones..." as the latter is an older work.

In the fields "Published," "Summarized," or "Observations," bibliographic references are presented in an abbreviated form. Complete citations for all references can be found under SEE MORE

A list of acronyms and abbreviations used in the database has been created to facilitate consultation. SEE MORE

The available search fields allow for the identification of documents by date (always mentioning a Start Date/End Date) and by theme (using the free search field where names, places, archival references, etc., can be entered).

When searching by a long period (e.g., a century), enter the full start date (e.g., 1400-01-01) and the full end date (e.g., 1499-12-31).
