The thematic dossier for issue n. º 45, coordinated by Judite Gonçalves de Freitas, to be published in June 2026, is entitled: "The Reconfiguration of the International Order in a Multipolar World".

The next issue of População e Sociedade will feature a thematic dossier entitled: “The Reconfiguration of the International Order in a Multipolar World”.

We are living through a period of transition in which the unipolar hegemony of the post–Cold War era is giving way to a more diffuse distribution of power. The emergence of new poles of influence, the contestation of liberal norms, and the reconfiguration of strategic groupings (such as the expansion of BRICS+) suggest not merely a change in leading actors, but a possible reform of the very rules of the international game. In this context, the strengthening of powers such as China, Russia’s strategic assertion, the growing role of intermediate actors such as India, Brazil, and Turkey, as well as the persistent tensions involving the United States and Western alliances, highlight a scenario of competition that is simultaneously material, normative, and institutional. At the same time, there is an ongoing attempt to redefine mechanisms of global governance, standards of legitimacy, and forms of international cooperation.

This thematic dossier aims to bring together contributions that analyze, from different theoretical and methodological perspectives, the contemporary dynamics transforming the international order. It seeks to understand whether we are witnessing a simple redistribution of power within existing institutions or a deeper transformation in the norms, structures, and operational logics of the international system.

Particular welcome is given to works addressing the relationship between multipolarity, international legitimacy, security, international political economy, global governance, and transformations of multilateralism.
