José Guilherme Pacheco (1821-1889) – a political biography

Supported by the Municipality of Paredes, this research project aimed at a deeper understanding of José Guilherme Pacheco, a singular figure from the municipality of Paredes – yet one who far exceeded its borders. This biographical work presents the significant events of his personal and political life, from his involvement in local politics to his role as a member of the Parliament, in the context of 19th-century Portuguese politics.

This project aims to correct errors, fill gaps, and especially address the omissions that persisted regarding the life of José Guilherme Pacheco, thereby revealing his life with the utmost accuracy and exposing the true scope of his work and legacy. Thus, we present a biography of José Guilherme Pacheco, an eminent politician of Portuguese liberalism, whose name is inseparable from the municipality of Paredes. He transformed the defense of local interests into a personal cause, dedicating himself with great commitment on various stages – local, regional, and national –, garnering admiration and influence that extended far beyond Paredes. This project will lead to the publication of a work with Project’s results by the Municipality of Paredes in 2024.
