Population and Society Journal, no. 43

The thematic dossier for issue n. º 43, coordinated by Judite Gonçalves de Freitas, to be published in June 2025, is entitled: "Current crises - collapse or resilience?".

In an increasingly vulnerable and interdependent world, crises, both national and global, have profoundly shaped political, social and economic dynamics in the 21st century. The convergence of challenges such as armed conflicts, migratory crises, climate change, growing social inequalities, accelerated technological transformations and economic instability highlights the interconnection between the local and global spheres. This scenario is aggravated by ideological polarisations and the spread of disinformation, which undermine dialogue, cooperation and effective governance. At a time of great uncertainty about the future, two main narratives are emerging: that of collapse, where systems fail in the face of adversity, and that of resilience, which represents the ability of individuals, communities, states and international organisations to adapt and overcome. The next issue of Population and Society invites researchers, professionals and doctoral and master's students from various fields of knowledge to submit papers that explore this theme from different perspectives, such as:

  • Political and social crises - armed conflicts, political polarisation, migration, human security, peace treaties;

  • Economic Crises - economic and social inequality, global inflation;

  • Technological Crises - lack of privacy, surveillance, disinformation and fake news.
