Routes of Memory

The objective of this project was to create tourist routes in the North of Portugal based on the flows of Portuguese emigration to Brazil from 1822 to 1949.

In order to achieve this goal, a comprehensive investigation was conducted, covering historical, artistic, cultural, sociological, anthropological, economic, and management aspects. The aim was to provide a set of knowledge tools to stimulate, throughout the entire value chain of the tourism sector, an innovative approach to heritage valorization, promotion, dissemination, and tourism competitiveness in the northwestern Iberian region. In 2018, the study on the motivations of Brazilian tourists visiting Portugal was initiated, along with the development of a digital platform intended to communicate roots tourism experiences to Portuguese descendants. In September 2019, several presentations related to this project were made at the International Seminar on Iberian Studies: Associative Practices and Roots Tourism.
