This publication, produced within the scope of the DIGIGOV – Digital Diário do Governo (1820-1910) research project, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology and the Portugal 2020 funding programme (PTDC/EPHHIS/0777/2014), publishes over a dozen studies on the official newspaper of the Portuguese State, analysing its origins, the evolution it has undergone over time at various levels, its relationship with the State and the political power, highlighting its importance as a historical object and as an actor in the History of Contemporary Portugal. Other chapters explore the official newspaper as a historiographical source for other studies, taking advantage of the diversity and richness of its contents. Finally, as a result of the collaboration in the mentioned project of foreign researchers, from Spain, Italy, France, United Kingdom, USA and Brazil, this volume includes a set of studies on the official newspapers of the respective countries, which allow establishing a comparative analysis with the Portuguese case.
