The Liberal Revolution of Porto of 1820. Human Rights and Political-Economic Legacy

The aim of this issue is to contribute to the deepening of the knowledge regarding a historical fact that was part of the wave of liberal movements that traveled across southern Europe and had profound repercussions in Portugal, putting an end to the Ancien Régime and giving rise to constitutional parliamentarism.

Starting with the influence that the liberal movements of England and Spain exerted on the Porto Revolution, followed by the implications that this Revolution left in the Portuguese-Brazilian press, this dossier also focuses on the importance that the work of the Liberal Courts assumed in the post-Revolution years, namely with regard to a profound reform of various sectors of the Portuguese society, including the role of the Council of State and the secular clergy. Finally, the consequences of liberalism in the secondary sector are analyzed, including the main incentives to industrialization and the main obstacles faced by this sector between 1820 and the beginning of the First Republic, in 1910.

The Varia section features two articles. One on the historiographical inquiries carried out by Sebastião Francisco de Mendo Trigoso Homem de Magalhães [1773-1821], one of the first secretaries of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Lisbon; the other on the Brazilian community in Germany in recent years, analyzing the sociodemographic profile of Brazilian immigrants in that territory.
