O contrato de fretamento de navios entre os tempos medievais e modernos – breves notas de investigação

This text intends to study the evolution of the shipping chart between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. That task will be achieved by comparing the contents of one chart dated back from the fourteenth century and the ones produced in Porto during the sixteenth century which are available in the second volume of my work intitled Porto. A construção de um espaço marítimo nos alvores da Época Moderna, accessible online in the Porto’s University repository. Raised by issues around the medieval fiscality - which don’t seem to be very relevant in the texts here under scrutiny - the shipping charts otherwise point for the evolution of a kind of awareness of the sea, the need for maritime risk management, and potential merchant strategies, which are especially evident in the Early Modern documents.
