Estremoz in the Restoration War (1641-1668)

Edições Húmus
2022

The Estremoz military square played, throughout its history, an important role in the defense of Portugal, providing rearguard support for the border line. One of the richest and most troubled periods was experienced during the Restoration War. This book reveals the daily lives of its inhabitants during these 27 years, filled with dangers, uncertainties, illnesses, deprivations of all kinds, but also marked by acts of courage in the face of the threat of imminent attacks, and of solidarity in welcoming the refugees from locations attacked by the enemy. It also discusses the actions of the civil and military authorities and how they overcame difficult situations, including the simultaneous quartering of thousands of fighters who flocked to this square on their constant journeys. It also seeks to understand the way its inhabitants interacted with the community composed of national and foreign military personnel residing in the town, through two important moments in their lives, wedding and their children's baptism.
