Publication of ‘The European Parliament and European Elections: Essays on Democratic Legitimacy’
This book is the result of a research project on the transnationalisation of political parties in the European Union and the 2019 European elections, debating the democratic legitimacy of the European Parliament, its visibility in the public sphere and its role in politics.
As the European Parliament is the leading institution in the direct relationship with citizens in the European Union, the debate on its role is fundamental, not only in election years, but also throughout the terms of office. The link between the national level and the European level of governance is also addressed, in terms of interparliamentary relations, under the principle of subsidiarity. The book also discusses, from the perspective of ‘legitimacy by results’, the role of the European Parliament in today's crucial areas, namely economic governance, internal/external security and migration and refugee issues.
